Welcome to Veepro Holland
Veepro Holland works closely with the cooperative cattle improvement organization and the Friesian Holland cattle studbook. Which are holder of the pedigree for 26 different cattle breeds, including the Holstein Friesian. Roughly around 80% of export heifers originate from members of these studbooks. Thanks to them, the breeding goals are updated every 5 years after thorough evaluation. This ensures long-term continuous cattle improvement. This is done by breeding with healthy and efficient herds and monitoring the current herd with farm inspections, MPR, management products, expertise, semen and embryos. This ensures that the best calves are born, delivering high milk yields and high life production. There are also multiple pedigree holders for sheep and goats. For example; Blackblaze Breeders group, Association of Special Sheep Breeds, Studbook Blue Texel, Dutch organization for goat breeding and many more.
Holstein Friesian (HF), originated in the Netherlands, is nowadays known as the world’s highest producing dairy cow with a long production life. These cows are black and white or red and white. They have a slim body with less muscle than other cows and have excellent udders. The black and white cows produce more milk than the red and white cows.
The Maas-Rijn-IJssel (MRIJ) cattle are a reddish-brown dual purpose breed, with high protein and fat contents. Being a dual purpose breed, they also put on a good portion of meat. They’re a robust type of cattle able to manage very well on a sober ration, with good fertility and strong legs.
Flechvieh is the most commonly seen cow in dairy farming, after the Holstein Friesian. Originated from central Europe, this cow is a dual purpose breed with a white head and a brown and white coat. It’s a strong and sober breed with excellent udders.
Fries-Hollands cattle is an uncommon dual purpose breed originally bred in Friesland. They have powerful white legs and a good muscle growth, with a black and white coat.
The Blaarkop is a breed that goes well with a sober management. It’s a dual purpose breed with a little bit more focus on meat compared to dairy. They have good legs and claws and have a thick coat. They are an excellent breed for organic farmers.
The Montbeliard is a dual purpose breed, focused on dairy production with little concern. This breed is getting more popular. The breed is originally from France. It’s a cow that is easily impregnated and with a long dairy production.
The Brown Swiss originated in Swiss is a cow with a lot of strength and strong claws. Its legs and claws are scored as higher than the mean. It’s a dual purpose breed with more focus on dairy compared to meat, with high fat proteins.
As stated before, the Dutch dairy cow population primarily owes its high quality to its genetic potential. Due to the high level of participation of Dutch dairy farmers in breeding activities like herd book registration, milk recording, type classification, and artificial insemination (AI). Nowhere in the world is the level of dairy farmer participation in these activities as high as in the Netherlands. As a result, AI organizations can develop and implement fine-tuned breeding programs. The most important selection criteria are milk production, fat and protein percentage, age durability, functional traits (udder, feet and legs), fertility, health, calving ease, and type. The indexes for calculating the breeding values are constantly updated according to the newest scientific insights.
